AI Is the Most Accessible Economic Lever Queer Nigerians Have Ever Had

An acquaintance asked me last week: "What is Claude?"

My first reaction was shock. Then I caught myself. The shock was projection, what psychologists call the curse of knowledge—assuming everyone knows what you know because you're surrounded by people who do.

The numbers confirm my acquaintance’s situation isn't an isolated case.  According to Microsoft's AI Economy Institute, only 16% of the global working-age population used AI in the second half of 2025.

Even among those who have tried it, fewer than 5% pay for premium features. ChatGPT, the most popular AI tool globally, converts only 5.5% of its 900 million weekly users into paying subscribers. This means most people either haven't touched AI or are only scratching the surface of what's possible.

The Opportunity

AI has an unusually low barrier to entry. You don't need a university degree, a corporate reference, or permission from gatekeepers who might discriminate against you.

Additionally, Anthropic's research shows professionals using AI tools complete complex tasks 40% faster and produce work rated 18% higher in quality. You can prototype an app without hiring a developer, automate workflows that used to require expensive software, and build income streams that didn't exist five years ago.

I've lived this. My marketing career shifted from incremental to exponential when I learned to use AI as a thinking partner. For EmpowerQ, AI let a six-person volunteer team publish Nigeria's first LGBTQ+ workforce research report, build an AI career coach, and coordinate multiple programs across three time zones.

The Program

We're running a four-week training called AI for Queer Empowerment, starting May 9, 2026.

Week 1: Foundations (May 9)

How AI works, which tools exist, when to use them.

Week 2: Career Applications (May 16)

Job applications, interview prep, salary negotiation, personal branding. Focus on remote-first strategies that remove visibility risk.

Week 3: Income Generation (May 23)

Freelancing, digital products, automation, content at scale.

Week 4: Long-term Strategy (May 30)

Daily workflows, staying current, strategic thinking about where AI helps versus where human judgment matters.

  • Format: 90 minutes per session (60 minutes instruction, 30 minutes hands-on practice)

  • Cohort size: Maximum 40 participants

  • Tools covered: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity

What Happens After?

Participants move into a hackathon series to build real projects: apps, automation systems, content platforms, service businesses. We provide mentorship, technical support, and community. The best projects receive small grants to scale.

Success story: Joseph, an EmpowerQ member, was unemployed for months before using AI tools to optimize his job search. Within weeks, he landed a Product Marketing Associate role at a remote tech company. Six months later, he was promoted to Manager.

We want to create fifty more Josephs. A hundred. A thousand.

How to Join
